EBT Online Pilot Rollout

The United States Department of Agriculture, the federal agency that oversees the foods stamps program started the Online Purchasing Pilot in January 2017 with select retailers for the initial launch of the EBT Online Purchasing Pilot.

The first state to actually launch an online EBT program was New York, starting in 2019.

Since New York launched its program, more states have followed.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the USDA expanded the program to include nearly the entire country.

As of August 2021, 47 states and the District of Columbia have been added to the pilot program to allow SNAP recipients the option to shop online with their EBT cards for delivery or pickup.

Shopping for Groceries Online with SNAP Benefits

The USDA has approved a select list of grocery stores that can accept EBT online for pick up and delivery.

This includes major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, ALDI, Kroger, and more.

We are going to explain below how EBT online shopping works with the major retailers that have been approved by the USDA.

How to use EBT online on Amazon

For Amazon.com, customers must add a SNAP EBT card to an Amazon account.

To do so, visit, Amazon.com/snap-ebt.

An active Amazon account is required to participate in SNAP online purchasing.

While shopping online at Amazon.com using your EBT card, only authorized food items labeled “SNAP EBT eligible” can be purchased.

Additionally, EBT purchases on Amazon are delivered to your home.

However, a minimum purchase amount is required.

How to use EBT online at Walmart

You can order groceries online at Walmart at walmart.com/grocery.

Additionally, you can use the Walmart Grocery mobile app.

During checkout, select EBT Card as the payment method.

However, if you are ordering online for curbside pick-up, where what you need to know:

  1. You will receive an email when your order is ready.
    2. Once you get the email, check in with the Walmart Grocery app to let the store know you’re on the way.
    3. Follow the orange signs to the pickup area, and park in any designated spot.
    4. Store associates will bring your order to you!

How to use EBT online at ShopRite

You can order groceries online at ShopRite at ShopRite.com, or on the ShopRite mobile app.

You can choose to Pick up or have your order delivered to your home.

During checkout, select “Pay Online”, then click the “Place Order” button.

Next, select EBT SNAP Card as the payment method to complete checkout.
