Georgia Food Stamps to increase by 25%

Here’s great news for Georgia food stamps recipients.

The Biden administration is increasing food stamps benefits by 25%. Yes, you read that right.

Starting in October 2021, average food stamps benefits will rise more than 25% above pre-pandemic levels.

This marks the biggest-ever increase for the program. The boost comes as a temporary increase of 15% was set to expire in September.

The increased assistance will be available indefinitely to all Georgia SNAP beneficiaries.

This increase is part of efforts by the Biden Administration to strengthen the country’s social safety net, including SNAP benefits.

How long will the increase in benefits last?

Unlike the 15% increase in food stamps that was approved from January to September 2021, the 25% increase in food stamps for 2021 is permanent.

This means that you will receive this benefit increase indefinitely – as long as you continue to qualify for SNAP EBT benefits.

Can I use Georgia SNAP EBT at Fast Food Restaurants?

The Restaurant Meals Program (RMP) is a federal program that enables qualified elderly, disabled, and homeless food stamps recipients to buy food at authorized restaurants. Any state or county can enroll in the Restaurant Meals Program.

The purpose of the program is to help expand food access to those who do not have a place to store and cook food, who may not be able to prepare food or who don’t have access to a grocery store.

Not all states participate in the RMP.

Currently, the Restaurant Meal Program is running in the following states:

  • California
  • Arizona
  • Illinois
  • Maryland
  • Michigan
  • New York
  • Rhode Island

As of December 2021, the state of Georgia does not currently participate in the Restaurant Meals Program.

However, during natural disasters like hurricanes, SNAP EBT cardholders in affected areas are temporarily approved to use their EBT cards at restaurants to purchase hot food.

For example, during Hurricane Michael in 2018, some Georgia SNAP recipients who were
plagued by power outages were allowed to purchase food at restaurants with their cards.
